Great news a new N97 firmware v12.2.024 is now available for download. It shows up on your device SW update but it will direct you to use the Nokia Software Updater instead. I don’t know what this update contain except for the brief description below “Improves phone’s performance and brings you the latest features”. Only one way to find out. Report back on your findings. There was a tweet earlier today from @alextootchie – N97: new firmware 12.0.023 available on RDA. Could the new firmware be released in the next few days? Weeks? What’s the change log? No one really knows at this point but I do hope that it will fix a lot of the issues on the N97 and add more features such as the full kinetic scrolling. I guess for now we’ll have to keep checking SW updates.

Rumours have spread very quicky that the N97 will get a v12 firmware update by the end of this month. If this is true, this would make it the second firmware update since the release of the N97. One can only hope that this update will be a big one and bring tons of improvements and bug fixes. No change log has been reported at this time but it is expected to have a complete kinetic scroll (seen on some youtube video for 5530) and maybe Skype. This could likely happen since NokiaWorld 09 is a few more weeks away.
Nokiamobiletalk.com has posted Skype installer file for the N97 and 5800. However, it will only work on 3 carriar networks. I’ve tried to installing it but I can’t get passed the login screen. So if you are on any of the 3 network in HK, UK, etc. Let us know if it works.
I can only hope that there will be a full working version available soon.

Mippin has released 4 homescreen widgets that you can download for the N97. I was only able to find NewsBuzz, one of the 4 widgets, at the Ovi store. Once you’ve downloaded NewsBuzz, there is an ad at the bottom of the widget that lets you download the other 3 one at a time. ZAGG the maker of the famous invisible SHIELD is now selling the screen protector for the N97. You can purchase either the full body coverage (2 pieces front and back) or just for the screen. I have used their screen protectors on capacitive touch screen phones before which is great, but I don’t know how well they will work on resistive screens. You might be able to find them at your local mall to see how it looks and feels and have them install for you since the installation process requires you to spray on a solution.

It looks like tomorrow is going to be a happy day for all N97 users. It was reported by nokiaconv that v11.x.021 firmware will be released sometime tomorrow (July 1st). Although it’s not clear which country will get it first and whether it is going to be over the air (OTA) update. The ways to find out is to check your Nokia Software Updater (NSU) or hit the software update icon on your phone throughout the day.
This firmware is purely for bug fixes. Skype will have to wait, hopefully soon. This firmware should improve the N97 significantly from the installed version but it is still far from stable. However, it’s great to see that Nokia is releasing one so soon if they do release one tomorrow. Read more…
