Protect your N97 lens from scratches

I’ve seen many pictures where the lens glass has been scratched due to tiny particles trapped underneath the cover. My lens also has been scratched but only on the side of the lens. Nothing in the middle that would cause the quality of the picture to degrade. My pictures are still clear with flash on.

To protect the lens from more scratches, I cut a small piece film from a screen protector that I had left for my camera. I made sure that it was long enough to slide right under the cover (see picture) and that it was thin enough for the cover to slide over. This kept the cover from getting stuck.

This is only a temporary fix. I do hope Nokia can do something about this. For a $700 flagship phone I do expect more. At least for now I feel more comfortable sliding the cover open.

  • Hi,
There's now a petition regarding lens scratching at http://www.petitiononline.com/N97lens/petition.html

i've done the same thing - i've also ordered a replacement camera lens from Hong Kong. yup. i've got it already (took a couple weeks) and it cost me about $12USD + $4 shipping. the replacement part includes the sliding cover, the frame around it, the glass that otherwise gets scratched (including the part that covers the dual LEDs).

my plan is to adhere some microsuede or chamois to the underside of the sliding lens cover. i bought this online so i could experiment with it before tearing apart my N97. i've got high-hopes...

want to see pics of the part i ordered? i've uploaded pics here:

dude i did that but the image gets foggy as if its smoke every where. i dont know how you got such clear image i guess its fake pics. i have completely removed the cover now. there is no problem at all now.
  • well i think this really depends on what film you are using and how thick it is. sorry to hear that it did not work out for you but this is a real pic w/film. I still have the film on and my pictures are perfectly fine.
  • Looks useful. Thanks for the tip! Lens cover should be doing the protecting though =(
